The Parc des Salines, located in Les Sables d’Olonne, represents 10 hectares of salt marshes sheltered by the sandy dunes of the Atlantic Ocean. Salt production dates back to ancient times. The site has become a must-see for visitors to the Vendée region and has been promoting the region’s natural heritage for some thirty years now. The Salines have been awarded the “Qualité tourisme” and “Accueil vélo” labels and receive between 30 and 35,000 visitors each year. They allow visitors to discover the history of salt through the salt marshes and to meet the salt workers to find out about their work while enjoying a moment in the heart of nature. The aim of the park is to raise awareness of ecology and to show how man and the environment can work in harmony with each other. A team of six professionals welcomes you to the salt marshes to share all the secrets of the salt marshes.
Between boat trips, walks in the Salt Adventure Park, and canoe and paddle trips, an exploration between games, riddles, discovery of the salt worker’s trade, of the locks of the fish marsh and bird watching awaits you. Leave by boat for a guided tour of the marshes over 8 km (2 to 2.5 hours), to learn all about the history of salt. You can then meet the salt worker who will reveal all the secrets of his profession. Your children can also learn how to harvest salt for about twenty minutes and leave with their precious harvest of white gold. Along the way, games and riddles are offered to them. In the Salt Adventure Park, come and discover the fishermen’s huts and the guard huts on foot with your family while taking part in fun activities. Meet the salt workers who will reveal the salt traditions, harvest the salt in front of you and explain how the salt crystallises. Finally, let your children leave with their diploma as budding salt workers! In the heart of the salt marshes, you can also go paddling and canoeing, to get a more sporting view of the area.
Les Salines is located at 120, route de l’Aubraie in Les Sables d’Olonne, about 12 km from our campsite Au Pré de l’Etang.
The park has a shop for gourmets, where you can take home fleur de sel and various regional products as a souvenir of your stay in the Vendée.
